Christopher Sutton
Director, Musical U

From The Desk Of Christopher Sutton
LONDON, July 2021
Hi!

Christopher here, from Musical U.

I’ll cut right to the chase.

This week there is a special opportunity which could permanently change your relationship with your bass—and unlock abilities for you which most bassists only dream of.

While everyone else is still stuck slaving away note-by-note, reading sheet music and tab, and struggling to memorise the next lick, line or chord chart...

You’ll be able to just “pick up and play”, instinctively bringing the music out from inside you, through your bass.
Instead of relying on written notation or tutorials to tell you what to play, you’ll intuitively know the notes and rhythms to use, and how exactly to play them for maximum musical effect.

In other words: if you can hear it, you can play it.

I know that may sound “too good to be true”... But read on, and I’ll explain exactly how and why it is possible for anyone, including you.

When you fill in the missing piece that I’m about to share with you below, you can rapidly start sounding like one of those “talented” or “gifted” bassists, no matter what level of technical skill you’ve reached.

That’s right.

Whether you’re at the very beginning of your bass journey, or you’ve been playing for decades and feel you’ve “plateaued”...

... what I’m about to share could change everything for you.

Thousands of musicians have now discovered this for themselves, and describe it as:
"Essential"

"Mind opening"

"Fills in the gaps"

"Sheer gold!"

Now if you’re like most bass players who find their way to us at Musical U, I know two things about you.

First

You are passionate about the bass.

Playing can bring you a deep joy and a sense of peace and connection unlike anything else.

Those moments where you’re truly “in it”, lost in the groove, connected with your instrument and the sounds all around you…

Well, nothing else can compare.
Bass Connection

Second

In spite of how wonderful it can be, those moments have ended up being painfully rare for you.

In fact I’m guessing you’ve experienced a lot more frustration and disappointment along the way than you ever thought you would.

And that even if you’ve been playing for decades now, you still feel like you have some serious limitations
Frustration
And I’m not just talking about struggling to memorise the fretboard.

Or mastering certain fingerings or playing techniques.

Or finally nailing that one lick, line, or solo.

It’s easy to get lost in the tab, the hammer-ons, slap technique, raking, muting …

(that list goes on and on…!)

I’m talking about something deeper.

I’m talking about feeling like you’re always dependent on something outside yourself, to be able to make music.

Like when you want to learn something new you always have to run off and find the tab, or a chord chart, or a YouTube video to show you how to play it.

The music you love is “out there” and you have to try to painstakingly train your fingers to recreate it.

But deep down you know the music could—and maybe even should—be coming from inside instead.
Music inside
You wish you could just “pick up and play”.

That you could create your own great-sounding licks, lines or even full arrangements on the fly.

But any attempts you’ve made to learn to improvise, play bass by ear, or write your own basslines have felt seriously slow-going.

Like you’re trying to do something you just weren’t cut out for.

And if you’re like 99% of people who try learning bass, you end up feeling like you’re just missing something.

Like all those things you dream of doing…

Those must just be for the virtuosos like Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, or Jaco Pastorius.

And you?

Well, you just don’t have that kind of talent.

Sound familiar?

Listen, I don’t say any of that to bring you down.

I can personally relate to every bit of it.

I tried more than once in my teens and 20s to learn bass.

I had some guitar chops already, so I could transfer some rudimentary left-hand technique and get up and running quickly.

But then…

Every time...

After a few weeks…

My enthusiasm fizzled out.

Why?

Because the kind of bass I wanted to play...

It was free, and exciting, and creative.

I would hear incredible lines or solos on tracks and my enthusiasm would spark into life.

I could see clearly in my mind how I would play these tight rhythmic grooves on bass, the music just flowing out of me.

And I’d scurry off to pick up my bass again...

But before long I was back to the same old spot: painstakingly learning pre-written basslines, note by note.

And while there was some fun to be had with that…

It never really felt like I was being “me” on bass.

I even went as far as joining a band.

But again, something just was not hitting the spot.

If the epitome of bass playing was just accurately reproducing basslines like a robot, it wasn’t for me.

I still loved the bass.

But I just couldn’t seem to (forgive the pun) find my groove.

So I stuck to just playing what was written down for me, or I had memorised in advance. Mostly just for myself, in private.

That kept me “safe”—but left me always feeling weak. Limited. Less than.

Like I wasn’t a “real” musician, I was just pretending.

All the while I saw the “bass gods” out there, apparently having an instinct for it that I just did not have.

What they did seemed like magic.
But what if I told you that all those seemingly-magical skills are in fact learnable?
And the only reason that you haven’t learned them yet is because almost every single bass training out there focuses on only a single one of four parts that make up a complete musician?
The 4 H's of Musicality
Every human being has an innate capacity for music-making, and there are FOUR components of your musicality that must be developed for you to reach your full musical potential:

1: Your "Hands"

What are your fingers doing on your instrument?

And are they doing it quickly and accurately enough?

2: Your "Head"

Can you understand music intellectually, all the underlying theory and structure of how all the notes, chords and arrangements fit together?

3: Your "Hearing"

When you hear music, are you able to recognise and identify all the musical elements present? The notes, chords, rhythms, instruments, effects, and so on?

And can you connect that directly to the theory you understand and the instrument you play?

4: Your "Heart"

What’s going on emotionally as you hear and play music?

And are you able to communicate to your audience with emotion and expression?
If you look at any great musician—across instruments and genres, and throughout the ages, every single one of them is strong in all four of these areas.

Hands, Head, Hearing, Heart.

When all four of these parts are developed, it’s transformational.

You start to develop your inner musician.

You get in touch with your own true musical nature.

You connect with—and harness—your innate instinct for music.

And instead of the music always being “out there”, and your Hands needing to be trained to reproduce it robotically…

… the music starts coming from inside you.

So I invite you to ask yourself:

How well do you think you’re doing on each of these four areas?

How much time and energy have you put into learning each?

I’m guessing that if you’re like most non-professional musicians, over 80% of your time has been spent on the Hands, learning technique and new songs.

Maybe 10-15% has been spent on your Head, learning bits of music theory.

And perhaps 5% on Hearing, doing a little “ear training”.

Can you see now how lopsided that leaves you as a musician?
Imagine trying to sit on a chair which had three of its four legs far too short—or even missing entirely!
Chair
Now you see why you might always have felt a bit unstable and uncertain in music...

And why you have been hitting up against barriers which no amount of technique improvement was ever going to get you past.

Those are not inherent barriers.

You just haven’t yet skilled up in the corresponding areas of your musicality.

And it’s not your fault...

Like I said, almost every single bass training out there sets you up to think that Hands are the be-all-and-end-all of being a great bassist.

The result: however hard you practice, and however many lessons, tutorials or courses you go through… you never actually learn the skills that set you free on the bass.
Teaching those skills to average, everyday music learners is exactly what we specialise in here at Musical U.

And the good news is that just a small amount of effort to rebalance your musicality can go a long way, fast.

If it’s done right, you’d be amazed at how just a bit of work on your Hearing, Heart or Head lets you take all those Hand skills… and leap forwards into entirely new abilities on bass.

Things which previously seemed impossible are now clearly within reach for you:
  • Playing by ear any song you hear or remember.
  • Improvising brand-new melodies or solos on-the-fly.
  • Jamming with any group, sitting in and contributing comfortably.
  • Writing your own licks, riffs, lines and arrangements.
  • Performing with confidence in any musical situation.
We’ve seen this happen again and again, for thousands of music learners from hobbyist through to pro. Including many who had been nearly certain they “didn’t have what it takes”.

How does it work?

Our core training at Musical U has always been designed to work for any instrument, because the “core” skills are universal, across instruments and styles of music.

But a few years back we realised that there was an opportunity to deliver an even better learning experience for bassists by showing you exactly what to do and how. Directly on your instrument.

So we sought out a very specific bass pro…

Not one of the flashy mainstream “guru”-type players you tend to see teaching online bass courses.

Instead we looked for the person who best understood how to develop the inner bassist.

The person who understood all four components of musicality and would be able to help our students to quickly rebalance their skills and set them free to become complete musicians.

The person who had been responsible for finally showing me, after all those years, how to turn the bass into the instrument I'd always dreamed it could be for me.
That person is Steve Lawson, the world's premier solo bassist.

The man Victor Wooten described as "a brilliant musician" and Bass Guitar Magazine called "without a doubt the most free-thinking solo bass player ever to emerge from the United Kingdom."

Not just one of the top bass musicality experts - but one of the world's top musicality experts, period.

And we asked Steve to create something special for us.

Knowing that most of our students were busy adults with music as a passion project or a hobby rather than a full-time profession they could devote their life to 24/7…

And knowing that once they saw the rapid payoff from starting to “rebalance” their musicality they would be eager to continue that journey as quickly as possible…

We worked with Steve on something unusual...

Not like the typical lengthy method books or training courses that would take you weeks or even months to complete.

Instead: Short, bite-sized “mini masterclass” videos.

Each one just 10-15 minutes long—but packing a punch.

Each one revealing techniques and insights that would normally take a musician years to discover for themselves.

And each one accompanied by a “quick reference” sheet and set of practice tracks, to help you practice and apply what you learned in the tutorial video.

Over the last few years as our Resident Pro for Bass, Steve has created a whole series of 30 of these “mini masterclass” Packs.

They cover all the most impactful topics in musicality, to help you bring your Head, Hearing and Heart up to speed (and level up your Hands in the process too).

Any one of these 30 Packs could, in just 10-15 minutes, open up whole new areas of your musical potential and unlock exciting new abilities for you directly on your bass.

"After a month or so with Steve Lawson's Bass Packs, I'm pleased with the progress I'm seeing. I've found that the ideas from them really help me structure my practice time to give me some good results.

Steve is an inventive and beautiful player with good stories and lots of tips, from fingers to the instrument to what goes on between the ears, different kinds of playing for different situations, and mixing it up to keep it fresh and filling in gaps in your playing."

1 Year Of Full Musical U Membership!
Membership
When we first created the Packs in the Bass Musicality Collection they were actually intended to just act as a “bridge” from the core training modules in membership over to bass.

To help members who were learning with our main membership program to translate their new ear skills more easily onto their instrument.

But what we found was that Steve’s approach actually covered that core training too, so all the Bass Packs worked perfectly independent of the main membership program.

That’s why we are able to package it up separately like this now, and the Packs alone will deliver amazing results for you.

But to help maximise the benefit you get and extend your learning to topics even beyond those covered in the Bass Musicality Collection...

When you buy today we’re also going to include a full year of Musical U membership.

There’s no subscription or recurring payment, and it’s included absolutely free in your purchase today.

That means you get instant access to over 50 in-depth training modules, 6 powerful Roadmaps to guide you, and our Masterclass Library of over 20 hour-long masterclasses from musicality experts around the world.

Now one small warning:

This isn’t for everyone.

If your only aspiration on bass is to perfect your technique and precisely reproduce basslines from tab or sheet music, then that’s absolutely fine - and good luck to you! But the Bass Musicality Collection is not for you.

If you’ve read this far though, you have probably already realised that “better fingers” is not the answer.

And neither is mastering playing technique.

Nor memorising yet another bassline, riff or chord chart…
So if you’ve ever dreamed of feeling truly free on bass…

If you’ve wondered how some players can just “pick up and play”, figuring out the notes and chords by ear on-the-fly—and wished you could do that yourself…

Or if you’ve sometimes felt the urge to improvise, to just create your own amazing lines out of nowhere—if only you knew how to bring it out through your instrument…

Then the Bass Musicality Collection might just provide the exact “missing pieces” you’ve always knew you needed.

→ Imagine always knowing exactly which notes to use, to make your lines, riffs, melodies and solos musically powerful.

→ Imagine always easily capturing and keeping your audience’s full attention.

→ Imagine having rock-solid confidence in any performance situation, knowing that you can always bring great-sounding music from inside you out, through your bass.

That’s all possible for you.

And it can happen fast, when you choose to rebalance your musicality with the kind of training that’s available exclusively in the Bass Musicality Collection.

This offer will not be available for long!
So if you’re interested please act fast.

As always here at Musical U we’ve made sure this is a 100% risk-free opportunity for you.

We’ve got you covered in two distinct ways.

First: We’re here to make sure you get results.

You get unlimited personal support and guidance from our expert team, including the chance to get help directly from our Bass Pro himself. Any questions or confusion you might encounter along the way, we’re in there every day with you, to get you unstuck and moving forwards again.

Second: If, for any reason at all, you decide that the Bass Musicality Collection is not a good fit for you, no problem at all.

You’re covered by a 90-Day 100% Satisfaction Money-Back Guarantee. You can just drop us a line and we’ll promptly issue a full refund. No hard feelings and no hassle.

100%
GUARANTEED
We are so confident that you’ll love this training and be delighted with the results it delivers for you that we are covering it with a 90-Day 100% Money-Back Guarantee.
So there is literally nothing to lose, and everything to gain.

You will be amazed by the transformation that’s possible for you, when you add this missing piece into your bass life. It really is a night-and-day difference in the kind of bassist you are, going from “fretboard robot” to a truly free, creative, “natural” musician.

Your friends and family will be blown away when they hear you play and see what you are now able to do on the bass. They’ll wonder how and why you’ve been hiding all that “talent” up until now!

So remember:

This offer is available only for a limited time, with a huge discount and set of exclusive bonuses. The training is 100% flexible to suit you and it’s 100% risk-free to give it a try.
