My name is Cécile, and I'm a choir singer.
I wasn’t really able to sight-read and sight-sing. And I was quite hesitant about rhythm. Sometimes I was ahead, sometimes I was late.
I really wanted to be able to sing exactly in rhythm, because it's very precise in contemporary music. You really need to be exactly on the gesture, and follow the gesture of the conductor. And that was really challenging for me.
So I joined Next Level program to improve on rhythm and pitch.
It's very different because in Conservatoire, lots of students were more advanced and it wasn't really adapted to my level. And being with my coach who gave me the right exercises at the right time, it was a new way to approach it and then to understand the things that I saw in Conservatoire but didn't really understand. Before it was just “Wow, what’s this?”
To sing with accompaniment is very different. And he gave me good advice on this. And then I could really get better at feeling the music, hearing it. So many different approaches to be able to get better.
It really transformed the way I saw rhythm. It helped me a lot because now I know how to follow the gesture. Before I was lost and now I can do much better. And even my conductor, I think that she noticed the difference.
The open mic sessions gave me more opportunities to sing alone in front of other people. It helped me to be successful in auditions and really getting better at singing in front of an audience.
I had an audition to join a small choir. It was an upper level of the big choir I was in. It was the same conductor, and I got to the audition and... Wow, it was quite scary for me because I know how perfectionist she is. She hears everything.
Just when I stopped singing after my aria she just said “Okay, we can take you in the small choir.” And I was really surprised because they were supposed to have, at the end of the day, a meeting to discuss all the people they had seen audition. And she told me right away! So I was very surprised. Wow, I did something! I was quite proud.
What I love with Musical U is the community. It's really such a pleasure to sing for them and the people they have nice comments. And some are very inspiring because they compose, they sing with their instruments. And there are so many different types of musicians.
So that's very great to see all the different aspects of a musical life gathered in the community. And it's very inspiring to see that. And I think that each of us gives something to the others. And it’s really nice to see the weekly offerings of people that just come, sing, record themselves and share.
And it's a pleasure to be in this community. It really helped me to liberate in a way, my musicality. It was not just about trying to be on page, in rhythm, and things like this. It's bringing the heart inside. It just changes everything.
Music is about sharing and you can really bring the emotion to the audience. And so it changed everything in the way I sung.
I would recommend this program to every person who loves music, would like to sing, play an instrument, and feels stuck. The program will help them to change what music is.
It’s a different approach. And so you really are in the music in all these are aspects. And it's not just about the hands and you know, the technical parts.
And I think that missing all the other parts makes people stuck and they give up and that's such a pity. Because they could get so much better. And be able to sing and play with their heart, with the whole body.
And it changes everything because you have it. It's in you.
