Musical U
Instead of feeling like "I'm going to die now"
I feel like "this is so great!"

Case Study: Annette H.

I had violin lessons during childhood until I was about 19 and then I made a break to study something else. And about 11 years later, I started again. And I started to read books and do exercises and take violin lessons.

And then I started with Musical U, with the Living Music program. I was [also] able to take a course to learn how to teach parent-child music courses. And I started to do that, and I was looking for more and bought many courses... and I was a bit lost in all directions! I wanted to do this and that and everything.

And then I realized that I need some help. And then I thought, well, Musical U has been delivering so much and I trust them and they're like my musical family. I will try Next Level.

And then I had the interview and I was accepted. When I started, I got help with everything, with every question. And of course in Musical U it's always like that. You always get support and you always get answered your questions.

The coaches are personal, so you always have one coach. And I guess if it's important to change the coach, that would be possible too. I had one coach all through who was the there for me. And I really felt like, yeah, this person is here and has my best interest at heart and wants me to succeed and never says that my questions are stupid.

I wrote a practice log every day and that was really helpful too because I usually do a lot of different things during the day. And then in the end I think "oh, I didn't... I almost did nothing. And I really should work harder."

And then I write what I did and I see in the log, "oh, I actually did quite a lot of things!" And then write a weekly review. Nothing big, just, you know, reflect on how it's going.

And yeah, it's really helpful to talk to your coach every week. It's absolutely personalized so you don't lose any time. Next Level helped me a lot to focus and it was a very comfortable way of focusingSo there are assignments and they are not big, but it just helps keep the focus on what I'm going to do next.

I got shaking hands when I played violin. So if you play violin and this is the bow and it starts shaking, you cannot make a good sound. Every month there's a different guest who does coaching for the Next Level members. The first coaching was by a violinist and she showed us how not to have shaking hands in a performance and to remember what we want to play and you know, and also other things like how I can play more musically. And that shaking hand, I don't have anymore! That changed everything.

I learned how to improvise better. I already had wanted to go in that direction, and I taught myself how to find the intervals on the violin before I started. But there are many more ways one can do this, and it's really fun.

And I've also included what I learned when I teach parent-child music. I didn't know how to harmonize, and I always thought that I can never do that. I had no clue. And so one of the guest coaches who was actually teaching another subject there, but he has such a broad expertise, he showed me how to do that, and since then, I actually can do that. Yeah, it's really fun. Really fun.

Another thing that I really liked here is that it's so personal. So, yeah, it's a bit like family and. And we are sharing and collaborating and we get to know each other. If we like to! Nobody has to. So it was really helpful to have also the Open Mic, because as I am trying to perform more, this was a very good opportunity to perform in front of whoever else in the program is joining.

The program has really helped me with exactly what was missing.

And I think that this also was ensured by the 4H concept. So we looked at that at the beginning and in between and at the end: where do I stand with the Head, with the Heart, with the Hands and the Hearing to make sure that I don't miss anything.

And I really love the results I got. So I think we didn't miss anything. Just the fact that I know that my hand doesn't shake anymore and that I remember what I am going to play gives me much more confidence.

So now instead of feeling like "I'm going to die now, I'm going to die now," I feel like "this is so great!"

I recommend Next Level if you feel like you want to make a big leap forward.

It's specific, if there's something you want to focus on, but it also helps you with things that you might not know will help you. So it's holistic, but also specific, so it really brings you forward.  And with this 4H, you also become aware of where you can make a big improvement with just a little bit to invest.

What really helped me to feel really sure that it was right for me was the interview at the beginning, because no one's really admitted if it's not right for them. So in the interview, we talked about what my goals were and where I was standing and what I could invest. And it was really clear from the beginning that it will work.

I've had a very good year. Very intense, but with direction.

So I've come a very, very long way.
The team here are so proud of Annette for all her accomplishments and excited for how her musical journey will continue from here!
